Book Summary
A critical reference for genealogists, historians, and legal researchers.
Book Synopsis
The Center for Louisiana Studies is pleased to announce the third printing of Glenn R. Conrad's St. Charles. This volume consists of hundreds of abstracted civil records from St. Charles Parish, including mortgages, land and slave conveyances, letters of procuration, contracts, probate inventories and sales, acts of manumission, receipts, and tutorship records. These documents, which are arranged chronologically, lend insight into the day-to-day existence of pioneers in the Second German Coast. They also vividly illustrate the local administration of French Louisiana's legal system.
Identification of the principals involved in the legal instruments is facilitated by "A Partial Genealogy of Some Families of St. Charles Parish." Among the largest families listed in this section are the following: Albert, Badeau, Barri, Baudouin, Beauvais, Becnel, Belsom, Bernard, Bertrand, Borne, Bossier, Bourgeois, Brou, Champagne, Charbonnet, Chauvin, Chenier, Daigle, Degruy, Deslonde, Dorvin, Edelmeier, Falgoust, Frederic, Grabert, Haydel, Himel, Hofmann, Kindler, Labranche, Lambert, Loriot, Malliard, Materne, Mayer, Oubre, Pain, Pauche, Perret, Reine, Rillieux, Rixner, Robert, Rome, Roussel, St-Amand, St-Martin, Schexnayder, Toups, Troxler , Vicner, Waguespack, Zeringue, and many others.
Because of the importance of the families in the development of early Louisiana, and particularly St. Charles Parish, this work will prove of importance to genealogists, historians, and legal scholars.
