The German Coast
Abstracts of the Civil Records of St. Charles and St. John the Baptist Parishes 1804-1812
by Glenn R. Conrad

Book Summary
From a period preceding a major slave uprising, these are the civil records, including slave holdings and transactions.

Book Synopsis
Louisiana's territorial period (1804-1812) was a time of transition and turmoil for the residents of St. Charles and St. John parishes-- the German Coast. For all Louisianians the era dawned with a general sense of anxiety fostered by the train of events that had led to the Louisiana Purchase. It closed with an event of special import for the people of the Coast-- a major slave uprising.

This work, a companion to Mr. Conrad's earlier compilations, St. Charles and St.-Jean-Baptiste des Allemands, carries the abstracts of the civil records of these parishes to 1812. Here are found the usual array of conveyances, procurations, marriage contracts, successions, and receipts. In addition, however, The German Coast presents detailed information on slave holdings, manumissions, and trials. Finally, accompanying the work are two maps (22" x 30") of the parishes showing landowners of the territorial period.

The years between 1804 and 1812 were a watershed for the people of the German Coast. Profound changes were occurring in lifestyle and these changes are clearly demonstrated in The German Coast: Abstracts of the Civil Records of St. Charles and St. John Parishes.
