In the Time of Shimmer and Light
by Paul Schexnayder
About the book:
Artist Paul Schexnayder’s painting of a Trojan horse, a king, and a blue monkey in a boat developed into his first book, In the Time of Joy and Wonder (2017), which told the fantastical tale of these three characters and their discovery of an abandoned boat with a young oak tree sapling stowed inside.
In the Time of Shimmer and Light precludes this story of the mighty love oak tree. Queen Ida Peacock, Sir Galatoire Gator, and Tin Toy Hare are all living on a happy island home. A strange object floating in the water brings pride and envy to the island. A dark cloud of doom hangs in the air. However, Queen Ida has a plan to restore the peace, setting off the beginning of this three book series.
About the author(s):
A native of New Iberia, Louisiana, Paul Schexnayder earned his Bachelor of Fine Art degree from Louisiana State University. He has since worked as an artist, author/illustrator, and art teacher. His paintings are anecdotal and narrative. They have a bit of lagniappe (Cajun-French for “little something extra”) mixed into them. His style ranges from the poetic and whimsical to the eerily thought provoking, and despite being colorblind, he is known for his intensely colorful acrylic paintings. Schexnayder is a member of the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators, has illustrated over half a dozen children’s books, and has been the official Louisiana artist of many state festivals and events. He owns an art gallery in his hometown of New Iberia, where he currently lives with his wife and three kids. For more information, view his website at www.schex.com.
