About the Book
Quoi t’après faire, Hibou Hébert? (Whatcha doin', Owl Hébert?) is a children’s board book in Louisiana French, sometimes called ‘“Cajun French.” With a text based on phrases that adults often say to children, the book is filled with Louisiana artist Cayla Zeek’s vibrant illustrations of the state's flora and fauna. Using rhyme and alliteration in combination with common Louisiana names, the text seeks to facilitate reading aloud for French learners, whether they are second language learners or Louisianians who are learning to read and write in their native French.
Quoi t’après faire, Hibou Hébert? est un livre cartonné pour enfants en français louisianais, parfois appelé « français cadien ». Le texte, basé sur des phrases que les adultes disent souvent aux enfants, est accompagné d'illustrations colorées de la faune et de la flore de l'État, créées par l'artiste louisianaise Cayla Zeek. En utilisant des rimes et des allitérations, ainsi que des noms louisianais courants, le texte vise à faciliter la lecture à voix haute pour les apprenants de la langue, qu'ils soient apprenants de langue seconde ou Louisianais apprenant à lire et écrire dans leur français maternel.
About the Authors
Born in Lafayette, Marguerite Justus became interested in her maternal grandparents' language at an early age. She is the author of a poetry collection entitled Génération (Éditions Tintamarre, 2025) and works to promote French in Louisiana. She lives in her hometown with her husband and daughter.
Née à Lafayette, Marguerite Justus a très tôt développé un intérêt pour la langue de ses grands-parents maternels. Elle est l’auteure d’un recueil de poésie intitulé Génération (Éditions Tintamarre, 2025) et travaille à la promotion du français en Louisiane. Elle reste dans sa ville natale avec son mari et sa fille.
Cayla Zeek is an artist from Lafayette, LA. Her work is inspired by local nature, mythology, and dreams. She is passionate about creating with the Louisiana community while balancing the creation of her own artwork. She lives in her hometown with her daughter.
Cayla Zeek est une artiste originaire de Lafayette, en Louisiane. Son art s'inspire de la nature locale, de la mythologie et des rêves. Elle est passionnée par la collaboration avec la communauté créative de la Louisiane, tout en continuant à créer ses propres œuvres. Elle reste dans sa ville natale avec sa fille.
