Beloved Louisiana poet and emeritus Louisiana Poet Laureate Darrel Bourque returns to UL Press with migraré, a masterful exploration of the ancient Arabic ghazal form of poetry, keyed to the abstract expressionistic paintings of Louisiana artist Bill Gingles. Using this hypnotic form and Gingles’s paintings as a canvas and foundation, Bourque conjures a vivid, imagistic meditation on pressing issues of migration, difference, and acceptance in the modern world.
About the Author
Darrell Bourque is professor emeritus in English (University of Louisiana Lafayette) and a former Louisiana Poet Laureate. He is the 2014 recipient of the Writer Award from the Louisiana Festival of the Book. His books include In Ordinary Light,Conversations in Verse (with Jack B. Bedell), Where I Waited, Megan’s Guitar and Other Poems from Acadie, and From the Other Side: Henriette Delille (Yellow Flag Press). His newest work, migraré, will be released later this year by UL Press. Bourque is the recipient of the Louisiana Endowment for the Humanities 2019 Humanist of the Year Award and was recently named the recipient of the Dr. James Oliver-Monsignor Sigur Award by the Louisiana Council on Human Relations for his work in the areas of social justice and inclusion for minorities and the marginalized.
Praise for migraré
“What a beauty of a book. Poetically and artistically, it’ll lift your heart and free your spirit. ‘We were all sons & daughters moving,’ says one poem, ‘sons & daughters moving us into the darling world / we move inside of, the darling world we pass through.’ Let Darrell Bourque and Bill Gingles be your guides to that world, reader—I’m so glad they’re mine.”
